Room for a new Challenge?

Hefin Daniels- Children and Young People's Support Manager

Region: Cymru North

How long have you been in your current role?

I have been in my current role since September 2007, but have worked for FCA since 2001 as a Support Worker.

Did you always want to do this job?

I decided this was the type of work for me when I was sixteen and had a placement in a school as part of my GNVQ College Placement.

What training was required?

To do this job you are required to have at least five years experience with direct work with Children and Young People in the care system and a minimum of an NVQ Level 3. The company offers an extensive range of In house training that I have attended.

What is an average day like for you?

In my role there is never an average day. Every day comes with new challenges. One minute I could be sat in front of my computer in Wrexham completing my admin tasks and the other I could be heading to Anglesey to support one of our placements. I manage the daily support for Foster Carers and young people across the whole of North Wales, with the help of five full time support workers and five casual workers. I also oversee and co-ordinate various groups which we encourage our young people to attend like the young people’s forum and the Children who Foster group. The Support Service also sets up weekly activities throughout the holidays to places like Chester Zoo and Alton Towers, which are open for all our FCA families to attend.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The work flexibility; No day is ever the same. When children and young people are placed with FCA, they come from many different backgrounds and it is extremely rewarding to see them able to settle into family life and thrive to reach their full potential.

Is there anything you dislike?

Not really, at times the work load can become stressful, but that is the same as any other job.

What career ambitions do you hold?

To stay with FCA, gain my NVQ 4 and who knows what will happen! The company offers a number of opportunities that could enable me to try new things.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to do the job you do?

You need to be sensitive, caring and have an understanding of the complex needs that some of the young people today have.
