Room for a new Challenge?

Emma Davies- PR and Marketing Officer

Region: Cymru North

How long have you been in your current role?

I have been working within my current role for six years.

Did you always want to do this job?

I used to work as an art tutor and have always enjoyed working with children and young people so it is nice to have the sort of job where I feel I am really helping local children.

What training was required?

I originally did an art and design degree and started off by designing promotional literature and have developed skills on the job in writing press releases and booking advertising campaigns.
I have had on going in house training and developed many skills through a variety of experience.

What is an average day like for you?

No two days are ever the same but the average working day is very busy. It consists of identifying stories and writing press releases, organising and attending events to promote Foster Care Associates and recruit foster carers.
I also collate stories from staff, carers and children to produce the regional newsletter. I also book and co-ordinate all advertising and recruitment campaigns.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy everything about my job, each day is different and I get to be creative in coming up with new ideas. Recruiting foster carers is really satisfying and seeing children and young people finding foster families where they are able to develop to their full potential with the support of FCA is very rewarding.

Is there anything you dislike?

It can sometimes be disheartening when you get a poor response from a campaign for potential foster carers and k now that there are lots of children in need of foster families.

What career ambitions do you hold?

Within my current role I have worked on events with foster carers, children and social workers and am currently studying part time through the open university to become a social worker.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to do the job you do?

You need to be versatile, have good interpersonal skills and the ability to be a creative thinker. When dealing with children you need to be sensitive, aware of confidentiality issues, being flexible and approachable with carers, young people and staff is important.
